Rural Canadian towns face declining church attendance, youth populations, and limited amenities, forcing younger residents to migrate for opportunities and deepening community isolation. After visiting historic rural churches, like St. Luke’s Anglican Church, in New-Wes-Valley, Newfoundland, risk abandonment and demolition as rising operating and maintenance costs make survival difficult. This studio project proposes an adaptive reuse of St. Luke’s Anglican Church by reimagining the church as a shared space, while aiming to sustain heritage, strengthen community ties, and address the challenges of rural depopulation.
