My thesis explores Canada’s contentious past and its presence in today’s built environment. Removing monuments may seem like remediation, but erasing artifacts does not erase history; it risks masking uncomfortable truths. These effigies raise urgent questions: How much should we preserve to remember and avoid repeating mistakes? Can the past be reframed without diminishing its injustices? The Atlas begins by identifying and recognizing emblems of inequity embedded in our surroundings. Recognition must precede reconciliation. Only by confronting these contradictions openly can we shape a more equitable future, acknowledging that the inequities of yesterday still permeate today.
